„Mit dem Schlag – Gegen den Schlag“ is a novel written and visualised by me. It contains the myth of my grandfather, who was a musician and a soldier in the Second World War. The novel adds a vibrant story to his biography and researched historical facts, and supplements things he told me about his earlier life. The narrative plays out in a time when there was no room for human emotions, and when there was no room for emotions in music. You are thrown from one scene to another, experiencing what life was like around and within the war.

Within the novel, elements are added to visualise the two instruments – the saxophone and the clarinet. Musical notation is added to the ongoing text to emphasise the sonicity of the text. Images of various saxophones and clarinets show the diversity of the instruments, close-ups make the metal and wooden parts of the instruments tangible.
